About

Good food. Close to home.

Cookbook began in Echo Park in 2010: a small neighborhood market for produce, fresh bread, cheese and the ingredient missing from dinner.

Echo Park

The original market opens on Echo Park Ave. Produce up front, a deep pantry wall, and a case of things made that morning.

New hands, same corner

The original owners reached out to longtime customers Jon Shook, Vinny Dotolo and Helen Johannesen. They carried the market forward, keeping its neighborhood spirit at the center.

Today
Three markets, one café

Echo Park, Highland Park and Larchmont. All three carry produce, pantry goods, prepared foods and sandwiches. At Larchmont, the sit-down café serves breakfast and lunch.

The sourcing rule

If we would not cook with it at home, it does not go on the shelf. Produce comes from farms we can drive to. Pantry comes from makers we know by name. The board changes every week because the farms do.

The people

Jon, Vinny and Helen are the same team behind Jon & Vinny's and Helen's Wines. The stores are run day to day by the people behind the counter, most of whom live within a mile of one.
